Gastric Balloon Graz - Fast Weight Loss
Gastric balloon in Graz
Successfully lose weight in the long term
Welcome to the specialized internal medicine practice Graz. My name is Prof. Dr. Thomas Hinterleitner and I am pleased that you have found your way to this page.
Losing weight is a topic that has accompanied me all my life. Every person reacts differently to the food they eat. However, modern approaches such as DNA metabolic analysis usually leave patients alone with the findings. Standard diets such as SlimFast, OptiFast, Weight Watchers and Intermittent Fasting also usually only bring results for a short period of time. The reason? You give up the things you love under certain circumstances.
And that’s what makes the intragastric balloon such a great invention. With the support of the intragastric balloon and their personal aftercare coach, patients can lose 1-2 kilos per week and up to 35 kg in a year. The personal weight loss coaching ensures that you do not go on a diet, but learn to eat consciously. Because it is often the old wisdom that is true: The dose makes the poison.

FAQ
Who is eligible?
The gastric balloon is an organ-preserving method to sustainably reduce excess weight.
Patients with a BMI from 27 and up to 40 who have not yet achieved the desired weight loss success with common diets are eligible.
Yes. The method is recommended for people over the age of 18.
If the parents agree, the balloon can be used even under 18 years.
The process
Your question is a valid one. When we started offering gastric balloon therapies years ago, there were only a few providers. Currently, there are very many providers, some of which offer weight loss with the intragastric balloon very favorably.
If you want to lose weight successfully in the long term and stay slim even after the gastric balloon has been removed, I advise you to be careful. Crucial for your start into your new slim life is personal care by nutrition specialists. If you choose a low-cost provider, this care is usually missing. The consequence? Shortly after the removal, you usually gain weight again. Put your trust in us. For over 20 years, we have been improving care and weight loss results patient by patient.
Congratulations, if you have decided to have a gastric balloon, your new life will start immediately. In this case, please write us an email or call our hotline again if you have further questions or would like to make an appointment for a consultation.
Next, we meet in person at my practice in Graz. We will talk together about your personal medical history and clarify whether a gastric balloon can help you. At the end of this clarification, you will still have some time to think about it, at least 24 hours before the procedure.
The big day!
On the day of the procedure, please remain fasting. You will be put into a twilight sleep and wake up after 20 minutes with your new companion. You will still be somewhat dazed and will not be allowed to drive afterwards.
During the therapy you will be contacted and advised by our nutrition specialists at regular intervals – or you can of course contact them yourself. If you opt for a yearly balloon, we can add some more liquid to the balloon after a few months so that you can lose more weight than with other providers.
Miscellaneous
Intragastric balloons are also convincing in the specialist literature: in various studies, weight loss successes of 13-30 kg within 6 months have been determined. The successes are also in line with our experience from over 25 years with the intragastric balloon. With the annual balloon, which is refillable, you can even lose significantly more weight.
A gastric balloon alone will help you lose a lot of weight very quickly. However, the successes are short-lived if you are not accompanied by specialists during the therapy. Through the accompaniment of our nutritionists, you will finally make the jump from the yoyo trap and can be successfully slim in the long term.
The balloon occupies a large part of your stomach. As a result, you are already full from smaller meals and thus reduce your excess weight from the first day of the insertion. If you permanently change your diet and integrate more exercise into your daily routine or add fitness training that suits you, you can lose up to 35kg of excess weight in twelve months with gastric balloon therapy.
The treatment costs for the gastric balloon are as follows and are unfortunately not covered by health insurance in most cases:
Gastric balloon 6 months | Gastric balloon 12 months | |
Total costs (material costs for balloon, instruments, accompanying medication and examination) | 3.300,- | 4.500,- |
Cost refill Cost refill of a gastric balloon used elsewhere | – | 890,- 1.200,- incl. 6 months Nutritional advice |
Cost of removal of a gastric balloon used elsewhere (e.g. from abroad) | 1.200,- | 1.200,- |
There is no standard plan, each patient has his own eating culture!
Our Weight Buddies® are at your side during the entire wearing period and help you with individual nutritional advice to your weight loss success. In any case, it is important to permanently change your previous dietary and lifestyle habits in order to achieve the desired success. Together we can permanently reduce your excess weight, even after the removal of the intragastric balloon. Since we are very familiar with the special problems of our patients, we will find an individual way to your weight loss success.
Gastric balloon therapy in itself carries very few risks. During the insertion and removal of the balloon, you will be put into a light twilight sleep. This means that the risk of anesthesia is negligible.
In the rarest of cases, the balloon may leak, causing the blue-colored saline solution to escape. However, this is not dangerous and you can detect the leakage by the green discoloration of your urine. This can happen if the balloon remains in the body longer than the prescribed wearing time of six or twelve months and the material becomes tired.
After insertion of the balloon, you may experience mild discomfort such as malaise, heartburn, abdominal pain, nausea or vomiting during the first few days. The stomach must first get used to the balloon and tends to produce more stomach acid than usual at first. To help you get used to the balloon, we will prescribe pain-relieving medication and, if necessary, help with bridging infusions during the initial period. During the entire therapy period, we are available around the clock to answer your questions.
